Welcome to First Grade!

The goals for first grade are to foster confidence, self-discipline and respect in a Christian academic environment.  The students learn through integrated themes such as Thanksgiving, Mardi Gras, nutrition, and Dr. Seuss' birthday.  The themes carry through each subject, keeping the students interested and enhancing their love of learning.

Language arts focuses on reading, writing, spelling and handwriting.  First graders especially like spending time with their fourth grade reading buddies who meet with them weekly to share the experience of reading.  Math concepts are introduced through critical thinking skills and hands-on activities to master addition and subtraction to 12, simple fractions, time, and counting money.  Students celebrate the 100th day of school by counting and pasting 100 items of their choice on poster board to share with the class.  In science, the students study areas such as nutrition, matter and plant life cycles with experiments included in each unit.  Students are introduced to social studies in first grade, studying topics that are a part of their everyday lives.  Religion is integrated throughout the school day and focuses on the presence of God in our daily lives through the Gospel, Stations of the Cross and the Mysteries of the Rosary.  First graders host the all-school Christmas prayer service, re-enacting the Nativity scene.
