Welcome to Second Grade! |
| Welcome to the
world of seven and eight year olds, where curiosity and openness to
learning new things abound! Students develop critical thinking, problem
solving, written communication and cooperative learning through the use
of integrated thematic units such as pioneers and biographies of famous
people. Second grade is a year of major milestones as the students
celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and play an
important role in the May Crowning ceremony. In addition to the language arts disciplines of spelling, phonics and grammar, the students are introduced to literature. Students read books independently and share their experiences through different "Book Share" exercises. The students read Flat Stanley and mail Stanley to far away places for new adventures. In social studies, students focus on the United States and travel from east to west learning geography, history, civics and economics. Our new science series is broken down into the following units: Life science, physical science and earth science, with many hands on activities. in math, students work on single digit addition and subtraction, and will continue on to three digit addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping. Second graders also enjoy meeting with their eighth grade Faith Partners.
