Welcome to Third Grade!

Third grade is a time of transition for our students as they leave the cocoon of the lower grades and take on new challenges and responsibilities. One important milestone is becoming a "Book Buddy" to a Kindergarten student, which entails meeting weekly as a mentor to share the experience of reading.

Third grade students are moving on to new academic challenges as well. In language arts, students explore literature, writing, comprehension and critical thinking through various story themes. In mathematics, students work in small and large groups to master math facts and understand new concepts. Mid-year each student is challenged to design a "math board game" to share with the class.  "Communities" are the focus in social studies, including geography, government, citizens and culture, culminating in a trip to downtown Chicago in May. Science themes include "The Great Body Shop," space, matter, energy, and change.  Students study living things and the environment, and visit the Morton Arboretum for a hands-on look at what they learned in the classroom. In religion, students study the Ten Commandments, the Sacraments, and Saints of the Church and host the All Saints Day Mass dressed as their patron saints.  From new responsibilities, experiences and challenges, they are getting ready for the leap to fourth grade.
