Welcome to Eighth Grade!

Our Eighth Grade students are completing their tenure at MSW. Our goal is that by the end of the year they are prepared for high school and for the world. In language arts, the students are thinking, questioning, connecting and discussing literature in thoughtful and educated ways, through a variety of approaches to literary analysis. Literary selections are connected with the writing assignments allowing students to examine literature in greater depth. Drama is introduced in eighth grade as well and students see literature come to life through plays. The accelerated and regular math curriculum transitions students from pre-algebra to algebra I, with attention given to maintaining skills and introducing new concepts. Eighth graders are focusing on physical science, studying matter, energy, chemistry and physics. The material covered in U.S. history begins with the Reconstruction period and extends through present day. In addition, the students travel to Washington D.C. to experience U.S. history more closely and see democracy in action. In religion class and throughout the day, the students prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation by developing a deep, personal relationship with the Holy Spirit through prayer, commitment, sacrament and service.
