Academics and Programs

Grade 1

The goals for first grade are to foster confidence, self-discipline, and respect in a Christian academic environment.  The students learn through integrated themes such as nutrition, Thanksgiving, Mardi Gras, and Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  The themes carry through each subject, keeping the students interested and enhancing their love of learning.

Language Arts

     
  • Reading – phonics, word attack skills, sight words, vocabulary development, story plot (sequencing), story webbing and mapping, reading buddies with fourth grade reading partners.
  •  
  • Writing – sentence structure, basic punctuation, weekly writing assignments, Daily Oral Language
  •  
  • Spelling – words are assigned weekly, spelling tests include isolated words and dictated sentences, alphabet order of spelling words as introduced
  •  
  • Handwriting – letter formation and spacing, primary paper and pencil are used for writing activities

Math

Concepts are introduced through critical thinking skills and hands-on activities in:

     
  • Addition and subtraction to 18, mastery to 12.
  •  
  • Counting money (coins: penny, dime, and quarter)
  •  
  • Telling time by the hour and half hour (analog and digital)
  •  
  • Learning basic measurements
  •  
  • Learning geometry: simple shapes and patterns
  •  
  • Mastering fractions, such as 1; ½; 1/3; ¼
  •  
  • Solving word problems
  •  
  • Practicing Daily Oral Math and Mad Math Minutes (additional and subtraction)
  •  
  • Writing in a Math Journal

Science

     
  • Students learn and explore life science, physical science, and earth science with various hands-on activities.

Social Studies

     
  • Students explore concepts which are part of everyday life, including economic principles of production and consumption, comparison of social groups and everyday living in different times and places, famous Americans, major American holidays, and simple map skills

Religion

     
  • Integrated throughout the school day.
  •  
  • Focuses on the presence of God in our daily lives through the Gospel, Stations of the Cross, and the Mysteries of the Rosary.
  •  
  • Host the all-school Christmas prayer service, re-enacting the Nativity scene.
  •  
  • Enjoys meeting with their seventh grade Faith Partners.
