Grade 2
In the world of seven and eight year olds, curiosity and openness to learning new things abound! Students develop critical thinking, problem solving, written communication, and cooperative learning through the use of integrated thematic units such as pioneers and biographies of famous people.
Language Arts
- In addition to the language arts disciplines of spelling, phonics, and grammar, the students are introduced to literature.
- Students develop their writing skills using the 6 Traits Writing
- Students read books independently and share their experiences through different “Book Share” exercises.
- The students read Flat Stanley and mail Stanley to far away places for new adventures.
Math
- Students work on single digit addition and subtraction, and will continue on to three digit addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping.
Science
- Broken down into the following units: life science, physical science, and earth science, with many hands on activities.
Social Studies
- Focus on the Eight Strands of Social Studies: history, economics, geography, government, citizenship, culture, study skills, and technology.
Religion
- Second grade is a year of major milestones as the students celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
- Play an important role in the May Crowning ceremony.
- Enjoy meeting with their eighth grade Faith Partners.
